5 Ways To Get Started With Crafting

If there is one thing that I've learned over the past four years of being in the DIY community, it's that there are many different ways to get started with crafting! Whether you're brand new to crafting or already have some crafting skills under your belt, getting involved with the crafting community is pretty darn easy. 

If your new to the craft world and don't know where to begin than this post is definitely for you! Today I'm going to be talking about 5 different ways in which you can get started with crafting. When considering these options, I would try to keep two things in mind. Those two things being your personal time (how much time are you willing to set aside for crafting) and the craft area (like knitting) in which you want to learn more about. Once you figured out those two thing, it will be really easy to narrow down your crafting options!

1. Take a Class: Taking a craft class is a great way to learn a new craft and to meet other creative people. This is also a great option for people who feel that they are short on time and need to plan their ''creative time'' into their schedule. Many craft stores and local community centers offer art or craft classes. One craft store which is known for their classes is Michaels. They offer a variety of classes which can last anywhere from an hour to three hours. 

Another plus about craft classes is that supplies are provided for you. Depending on the class, some instructors may ask you to bring something from home (like a card or t-shirt) but most likely all the important supplies will be provided. So if your brand new to the crafting world and don't have a supply to your name, than a craft class would be a great option for you! 

2. Grab a Book: There are tons (and I mean tons) of great crafting books on the market. If you would rather sit at home curled up with a good craft book and some craft supplies, then this option may be for you! Finding a craft book is as easy as going on Amazon and just searching. Personally, I would use Amazon when searching for craft books because once you look up one book, Amazon recommends other similar books to your search.  This is a great way to discover new authors and new books!

3. Watch a YouTube Video: Now if you're more of a visual person who is short on crafting time, then watching a crafty YouTube video would be perfect for you! Over the past few years I've gotten more and more into watching craft related YouTube videos. This option for crafting is really great because you can see the actual project being made, the video itself is free (so you can watch it over and over) and you can make the project in the privacy of your own home. 

On the blog I've written a series called My Favorite DIY YouTube Channels. There you will find a list of YouTube channels that I think provide great crafting videos. Besides actual ''how to'' craft videos, you can also find videos which introduce you to crafting concepts (like paper crafting) One place where I liked to watch these types of video is on Blitsy! Blitsy does a great job of providing detailed videos about a variety of topics which help you really understand the basics of a certain type of craft. 

4. Join a Craft Group: Joining a craft group is a great way to meet other creative people who love crafting as much as you do! This option would be great for those crafter who have some craft skills under their belt but are looking to really fit some crafting time into their schedule. Now depending on the type of craft you're doing and where you live, may affect the type of groups which are available for you to join. However with some research and talking to other crafty folks, you're bound to find some group to join. 

Now if you still can't find a group in your area, don't rule out social media. For example, on Twitter there are many crafters who meet up at certain times each week to craft and share what they make. Some of these groups are Craft Hour and Folksy. So if you can't find a group, you can always check out social media groups on Facebook and Twitter. 

5. Buy a DIY Kit: Finally, if you are brand new to crafting, are short on time, have no supplies and have no idea what to make, then a DIY Kit is definitely for you! So in conclusion, there are many ways that you can get started with crafting! You don't need to have mad craft skills or fancy supplies to be able to craft. Just remember it's all about having fun, meeting awesome people and creating something all on your own!
